The African Renaissance Monument
From the city centre, you can completely change scenery and head towards Les Mamelles.
The African Renaissance Monument has become one of Dakar's most recognisable landmarks.
Standing 52 metres high on one of the Mamelles hills, it can be seen from many parts of the city. It is also one of the best places to enjoy panoramic views of Dakar and the Atlantic Ocean.
Visitors can enter the monument and make their way up to the observation deck.
End the Day by the Atlantic
After exploring the city, we recommend ending your first day by the ocean.
Ngor, Les Almadies and the Corniche reveal another side of Dakar: beaches, fishermen, restaurants, terraces and some of the best sunsets in the capital.
There is no need to fill every minute of your trip. Part of discovering Dakar is simply sitting by the ocean, observing the city and beginning to understand its rhythm.
Day 2: Gorée Island, an Essential Visit
If you only have three days in Dakar, we would dedicate one of them to Gorée Island.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Gorée is one of Senegal's most important historical places and an essential stop for almost anyone visiting Dakar for the first time.
The island is reached by ferry from the Port of Dakar and, once you arrive, everything changes.
There is no car traffic, and the island is explored on foot through narrow streets lined with colonial houses, colourful façades and views of the ocean.
What to See on Gorée Island
The House of Slaves (Maison des Esclaves) is probably the island's best-known landmark and an important part of the visit because of its connection to the memory of the Atlantic slave trade.
But reducing Gorée to this building alone would mean missing a large part of the experience.
The island invites you to slow down, wander through its streets, discover small workshops and galleries, stop by the sea or have lunch at one of its restaurants before returning to Dakar.

Day 3: Choose Your Dakar
After visiting some of the city's major highlights and discovering Gorée, we would spend the third day experiencing the side of Dakar that best suits the way you like to travel.
Because not everyone is looking for the same experience.
For Those Who Want to Experience Local Life
You can spend part of the day exploring markets, local crafts, food and neighbourhoods where Dakar's everyday life is easier to experience.
The Soumbédioune area, for example, offers an opportunity to discover the city's fishing and artisan traditions.
Here, the experience is less about visiting monuments and more about walking, observing and discovering how Dakar lives.
For Those Who Prefer the Ocean and a Slower Pace
Ngor and Ngor Island are an excellent alternative.
From Ngor Beach, you can cross over to the small island and spend a few hours by the Atlantic before heading back into the city.
It is a great option if you want to combine the cultural visits of your first two days with something a little more relaxed.
For Those Who Want to Discover More of Senegal
You can also use your third day for an excursion outside Dakar.
The capital is an excellent starting point for discovering other landscapes and experiences in Senegal.
